The 7 Primary Facial Silhouettes
Face shape classification is calculated by comparing four critical proportional spans: total facial length, bizygomatic cheekbone width, temple forehead width, and mandibular jaw width. For a deeper breakdown of vertical and horizontal balance, check our Facial Proportions Calculator.
Oval
Face length is approximately 1.5x width. Cheekbones are slightly wider than forehead and jaw, curving softly to a rounded chin.
Round
Face length and cheek width are roughly equal with soft, non-angular jaw contours and gentle curves.
Square
Length and width are nearly equal with strong, prominent jaw angles and a straight forehead hairline.
Rectangle / Oblong
Elongated vertical silhouette with relatively uniform width across forehead, cheekbones, and jawline.
Heart
Broad forehead and high cheekbones that taper distinctly down to a pointed or delicate chin.
Diamond
Cheekbones represent the widest facial point, tapering upward toward a narrower forehead and downward to a tapered chin.
Styling Recommendations by Face Shape
- Oval: Highly versatile; complements most hairstyles, layered cuts, and angular or rounded eyewear.
- Round: Angular, geometric frames and hairstyles with volume at the crown create lengthening balance.
- Square: Round, oval, or cat-eye glasses and softer layered hairstyles soften defined jawline angles.
- Heart: Aviator frames, chin-length bobs, and curtain bangs balance a wider forehead.
- Diamond: Browline glasses, textured crops, and chin-length styles accentuate high cheekbones.
